Companies that need a power source that is close to 100 percent reliable are considering fuel-cell systems to replace electricity supplied by utilties. One disadvantage is the installation cost. The cost for a fuel-cell system averages about $4,000 for each kilowatt hour of power, compared with $1,200 or less for a traditional power plant. But the operating cost is 25 percent less compared to traditional power sources.
