River Noyyal faces a slow death
Tirupur: Amid severe drinking water shortage experienced in the city and rapid deterioration of River Noyyal taking place owing to indiscriminate discharge of industrial effluents into it, yet another World Water Day was observed here on Monday.
The observance, thus, gained greater significance as the district administration was yet to come out with creative schemes to improve drinking water supply to the dwellers in the city and its suburbs proportionate to the rising needs, since the formation of Tirupur district on February 22 last year.
Supply
Most of the areas get potable water once in 10 days denying the public their right to get quality water for consumption needs.
Above this, the economic growth of Tirupur city happened at the expense of River Noyyal which had been facing slow death during the last few decades following uncontrolled effluent discharge into by the dyeing units.
Despite a Supreme Court ban, the effluents were still being discharged into the River Noyyal with the officials concerned remaining mute spectator to the happenings.
Environmentalists feel that the World Water Day should be used as a platform by the authorities concerned to focus their attention on importance of clean water for a healthy society and also advocating for the sustainable management of water bodies and water resources.
