Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) in the last few days raided three dyeing units and two bleaching units in the Tirupur knitwear cluster engaged in unauthorised operations and discharging effluents. The raids ended on Tuesday.
Of the five units, two of them are in the organised sector and the remaining were run without obtaining basic permission required from various departments concerned for running any industrial unit, TNPCB sources told The Hindu .
The units were located in Laxmi Nagar, Kongu Nagar and Murungapalayam, all situated on the northern side of Noyyal River.
Court order
Despite the Madras High Court's order to ensure mandatory zero liquid discharge (ZLD) in the effluent treatment process, these units were found releasing effluents during the raids, sources said.
The Board officials said a report had been sent to the TNPCB head office seeking necessary orders to seal the errant units and initiate criminal prosecution against their owners for illegal operations and drawing power without proper approvals from Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation.
TNPCB warned building owners who rented out their premises to the unauthorised units that the power supply to the buildings would be disconnected if illegal industrial operations were carried out there.
