Japan Atomic Power Co. (Genden) has decided to decommission its Tsuruga No. 1 reactor in Fukui Prefecture around 2010, officials of the firm said Friday. The Tsuruga No.1 reactor began operating 30 years ago as the first domestic light-water reactor. The reactor, a boiled-water type light-water reactor, has a power generation capacity of 357,000 kilowatts. The decision was made in response to inquiries from the local residents who wanted to know when the reactor would be taken out of service.
