Ukraine said it would keep its promise to closethe troubled Chernobyl nuclear power plant by 2000 but only if it received enough financial assistance from the West. "To date Ukraine's position is unchanged. Ukraine is ready to fulfil its obligation to close the Chernobyl station by 2000," presidential spokesman Olexander Martynenko told journalists. "But (this will happen) only on condition that there is enough financial assistance," he said.
