Nobel Economist Amartya Sen has for decades passionately advocated the unfashionable theory that without political freedom and human rights the poor cannot get out of the poverty trap, that in fact they need it more to prevent abuse and exploitation than the rich and the middle-class.This has now been formally adopted by the United Nations as its official development mantra.
