The US Treasury intervened in the proposed closure of one of the two big US uranium enrichment plants, warning the privatised company, USEC, that even considering such a "precipitous step" was deeply disturbing. The admonition was contained in a brief letter to USEC from Gary Gensler, Treasury under-secretary for domestic finance, who oversaw the enrichment company's privatisation two years ago.
