Under the proposed budget for 2002, funding for the Department of Energy's renewable energy programmes is to be cut from $376 million to $186 million. US Energy Secretary Spencer Abraham released the department's 2002 Budget request to Congress on 9 April, which would see a 50% decrease in funding available for renewables, as well as a $61 million reduction in research for energy efficiency programmes.
