US roadless rule may not curb energy exploration

A federal rule to prevent roads from being built on millions of acres of government land may not curb domestic natural gas exploration, a top U.S. Forest Service official said yesterday. Energy firms have strongly protested the rule issued by the Clinton administration to prohibit road construction on 58.5 million acres of national forests and grasslands, arguing it denies drilling for much-need oil and natural gas.
