Republican lawmakers from farm states on Friday urged the Bush administration to deny California's request for a waiver that would allow the state to bypass federal requirements for oxygen content in fuel. Peter Fitzgerald of Illinois and seven other Midwestern legislators said California should not be granted a waiver to help it reduce its dependence on MTBE, a fuel additive that reduces toxic emissions by increasing oxygen content.
