The Department of Energy will announce the development of a "hybrid" fuel cell that could be the forerunner of a new generation of electric power plants that run at record levels of efficiency with much lower-levels of pollution than conventional natural gas-fired power plants. The new device combines a fuel cell, which creates electricity directly from natural gas, with a gas turbine that uses the hot exhaust from the fuel cell to generate a second team of electricity.
