The cost of rural electricity is always over-estimated and state electricity boards pass off large-scale systems losses and power thefts as agricultural losses. The value added by 1 kwh of electricity in agriculture far outweighs the cost of power supplied to farmers, both in terms of higher acreage covered and yield, according to a study on rural electrification by the Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore.
