The Human Development in South Asia 2001 Report has drawn attention to the disproportionate share of the burden of deprivation imposed by globalisation on the women of the region. Among women, the poor, uneducated women working in the informal sector are the hardest hit. Proponents of globalisation will point to the fact that women are gaining form the new opportunities in low-tech manufacturing industries, such as textiles and garments.
