Mararikulam MLA T.M. Thomas Isaac has called for adopting a scientific approach to resolve the issue of waste menace in Alappuzha town and adjoining areas. At a press conference, Dr. Isaac said waste management efforts being undertaken by the Alappuzha Municipality were in the process of attaining the intended results. “Around 40-50 tonnes of wastes were daily transported to the waste processing plant at Sarvodayapuram nearly two years ago. As the waste processing process was affected, the accumulated garbage began to create inconvenience to local residents. It was at this juncture that the municipality launched the ‘Nirmala Bhavanam, Nirmala Nagaram’ (Clean house, clean city) programme that involved the disposal of wastes at source,” he said. The municipality has established 1,800 biogas plants and 2,000 composting units for residents. Another 3,000 units are expected to be supplied within the next three months. It had brought down waste generation to 5-6 tonnes per day, he said. Dr. Isaac, however, said much more needed to be done to ensure scientific disposal of waste generated in the town. The prime cause of the existing problem was the lag in processing the waste transported to Sarvodayapuram. He called for measures to ensure the conversion of domestic waste to biogas and manure. A separate centralised system must be put in place to collect waste from establishments and residences that did not have disposal mechanisms.
