a recent move by the Centre to commission the services of foreign consultants for studying wastewater treatment has been strongly resented by the World Wide Fund for Nature (wwf)-India. The wwf-India stressed that a study on the same subject has already been carried out by Dhrubajyoti Ghosh, an environmental engineer whose prescribed technology is currently being implemented in West Bengal under the Ganga action plan.

By applying Ghosh's technology, commonly known as the pond system approach, it is possible to render wastewater fit for use in aquaculture and agriculture. A government spokesperson stressed that wastewater treatment ponds in India are required to be designed as per the Central government's Manual on Sewage and Sewarage System, adding, "Therefore, foreign consultants will have nothing to do in this regard.'
