BHAWANIPATNA: Fly ash, red mud and lime grit are some of the wastes generated by alumina refineries and if not properly disposed of, these may cause health hazards. But the enterprising have the Midas touch. Many ancillary units have come up in the district which are thriving on these wastes. They use the wastes as material.
Sabita Fly Ash Industry, a brick-manufacturing unit of Bhawanipatna, is one such unit. The unit uses fly ash, red mud and lime grit generated from alumina refinery of Vedanta Aluminium Limited (VAL) at Lanjigarh to manufacture bricks. The firm has embraced a technology, jointly developed by the Institute of Minerals and Materials Technology, Bhubaneswar, and VAL.
In the recently concluded Kalahandi Utsav, the model of the manufacturing unit and products of the industry were on display, which provided a ray of hope for the educated but unemployed youths. On an average, the unit manufactures 10,000 bricks a day.
