Water scheme: inspection carried out

Officials asked to complete the works on time Udhagamandalam: In a bid to expedite the work on implementing the third water supply scheme to Udhagamandalam and its surrounding areas from the Parsons Valley Hydel Reservoir, near here, the Managing Director, Tamil Nadu Water and Drainage (TWAD) Board Gagandeep Singh Bedi carried out an inspection at the source on Friday. Among those who accompanied him were the Nilgiris Collector Archana Patnaik, the Chief Engineer, TWAD Board, Kothandaraman, the Superintending Engineer, TWAD Board, Ramasamy, the Municipal Commissioner T. Kumar, and Municipal Engineer B. Ramoorthy. Cost Mr. Singh urged officials to implement the scheme within the stipulated time. The estimated cost of the proposed scheme, according to official sources, is Rs. 27.72 crores. Pointing out that the supply is now 110 litres a person a day, they said that from the first and second schemes the supply was 13.5 million litres a day. It will go up by 6.5 million litres a day after the completion of the third scheme. The objective is to take care of the requirements of the local residents and the floating population till 2040 when the population of the town is expected to touch 1.40 lakhs. To a question they said that there was adequate water in the reservoir.
