Water sharing

The tripartite memorandum of understanding (MoU) between Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and the Union ministry of water resources, allowing the transfer of the surplus waters of river Ken to river Betwa, undoubtedly marks a significant step in sharing of waters between states. UP needs to be applauded for agreeing to share the Ken's waters with MP, despite reservations about the feasibility report on the Ken-Betwa link. It has shown the way to other water-surplus states, that they should share this precious commodity with the deficient ones. It also means if the Union ministry works hard, it can help build consensus among the states and gently nudge them into more such links. The signing of this MoU should, hopefully, be the first small step in the government's efforts to execute the ambitious river-linking project. (Editorial)
