Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has assured anti-corruption crusader Anna Hazare that his government is not only committed to an effective Lokpal law but also working on a comprehensive agenda to eradicate corruption and improve governance. Responding to a letter from Mr. Hazare, the Prime Minister said creation of Lokpal was part of the comprehensive agenda of the government. “Our government is also working on a comprehensive agenda to eradicate corruption and improve the governance. Several legal, executive and technical aspects would be included in it. The establishment of Lokpal is part of this comprehensive agenda itself,” the letter said. The letter assumes importance as Team Anna is campaigning in the Hisar Lok Sabha constituency by-election against the Congress on the ground that the party is not sincere in enacting an effective Lokpal legislation. Dr. Singh said “Our government is also considering several recommendations concerning electoral reforms. Among the recommendations that are being considered, you have talked about the Right to Recall. In a democratic society, getting political consensus on some issues is a must. We want to discuss several recommendations concerning electoral reforms with other political parties and act on the ones that are broadly agreed upon.” The Prime Minister said he was in agreement with Mr. Hazare on the imperative to empower the village council and maintained that his government was committed to implement in letter and in spirit the relevant constitutional provisions.
