We cannot achieve 6.2 p.c. growth rate, says CM

The Assam Chief Minister, Tarun Gogoi, has said that his State can simply not achieve the 6.2 per cent growth rate, projected by the Planning Commission, unless the Centre made up for the shortfall in resources. Talking to reporters here today he said the total estimated resources that the State would need to achieve the target was Rs. 25,000 crores. Its Plan allocation, in the 10th Five Year Plan, was just Rs. 8,315 crores. Mr. Gogoi said Assam did not have the means to fill the Rs. 17,000 crore gap, as it had "no way to raise additional revenue''. Tea and oil, the only major sources of revenue for the State, Mr. Gogoi said, were both doing badly as the "estimates have gone very wrong''.
