When it comes to the issues of globalisation, development and modernisation in India, the one comparison people are inclined to make involves China. This is because the two countries are extremely large with a rapidly growing population. Also, China has been trying to find its own distinctive path to development, just as India has, albeit following a different model. With a view to discussing the current rate of Indian development, a talk - "Development and Modernisation" - was held recently in the Capital. According to the World Bank, the rate of economic growth per capita in India for the period 1965-1986 was 1.8 per cent a year. In China it was at 5.1 per cent, in Korea 6.7 per cent, and in Brazil 4.3 per cent.
