The WHO has warned against any sense of complacency with regard to the threat to public health posed by TB. In a report, the WHO has pointed out that one-third of the world's population is infected with the TB bacillus and that someone or the other in the world is newly infected with TB every second. In other words, each year, eight million people around the world become sick with TB and the South East Asia region - India is part of it - bore the biggest burden, with more than three million cases.
