Woodside Petroleum Ltd said yesterday greenhouse emission costs could hinder Australia's chances of winning liquefied natural gas contracts. Woodside managing director John Akehurst said greenhouse gas emission targets agreed to under the Kyoto agreement would affect Australia but not its major competitors in Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Middle East. "The Kyoto regime implies effectively a trade tariff against Australian LNG because we are the only product affected by it," he said.
