World Bank to double aid to India

World Bank chief Paul Wolfowitz is reaching here on Friday amidst hopes that the international organisation will double its assistance to India.In New Delhi, Mr Wolfowitz will be holding talks with top Indian leaders including Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, finance minister P Chidambaram and Planning Commission deputy chairman Montek Singh Ahluwalia on Friday.The Planning Commission is all set to make the most of his visit and has prepared three presentations on agriculture, irrigation and water for the occasion. Sources said the commission is hopeful of convincing Mr Wolfowitz to fund projects in these areas.According to officials, India needs maximum support in the identified areas as economic progress will not be sustainable till there is accelerated growth in agriculture, wide-spread irrigation and adequate water supply to support the country's growing population.
