  • Orissa still hit, waters recede in Bengal, Assam

    Over 60 trains had to be cancelled, 40 diverted and many other short-terminated under the East Coast railway zone after the deluge in the Howrah-Chennai main line.     Low-lying areas in five upazilas of Sherpur went under water on Friday as eight rivers burst their banks due to incessant rain and onrush of water from hills. Official and local sources said water levels in the old Brahmaputra, Bhogai, Chellakhali, Maharashi, Someaswari, Kalagusha, Jhinai and Dashani rivers marked sharp rise, flooding low-lying areas in sadar, Jhinaigati, Sribardi, Nakla and Nalitabari upazilas.

  • Teesta flowing above danger level

    While all other rivers were flowing below their danger level, only the Teesta in the north was flowing 37cm above red mark Saturday morning. But the river swelled by onrush of water from upstream may calm down from Saturday afternoon, said an official of the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre. The Teesta fed by rushing water from the upstream after the barrage at Gazaldoba, opened across the border, has flooded some low-lying areas, since Friday night. The situation was likely to get normal from Saturday afternoon, he pointed out.

  • Flood threat in east UP

    Eastern Uttar Pradesh once again faces the threat of flood with all major rivers in the state rising menacingly. Incessant rains since the past one week have made all rivers record a steady rise. Floodwaters have already entered Lakhimpur district where more than nine villages have been inundated with water, following a collapse of embankments. Though no casualties have been reported so far, people are being moved to higher locations in the affected areas. According to a senior official, a flood alert has been sounded in more than 32 districts of UP, most of them in Purvanchal.
