On the occasion of World No Tobacco Day, the Northeast Society for Promotion of Youth and Masses (NESPYM) today urged the State Government to take effective steps towards banning cigarette or any other tobacco product to any person under 18 years of age and in an area within 100 metres from the boundary wall of any educational institution.
WWF-India, in collaboration with the Indian Army, is organising a series of environment education programme in some selected Army Schools, Sainik Schools and Military Schools across India. As a part of this initiative under Green Governance programme, WWF-India's Assam and Arunachal Pradesh State offices in association with the Army School, Shillong organised a two-day environment education programme at Army School 101, Shillong for teachers and students recently.
Though malaria is yet to strike all parts of Assam in epidemic form, 27 deaths due to the disease have been reported from different parts of the State till date with the hill district of Karbi Anglong being the worst affected with 18 deaths. Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that apart from some parts of Karbi Anglong, there has been no rush of malaria patients in any of the hospitals and health centres of the State. He said that last year, as many as 141 persons died due to the disease and 60 deaths were reported by the end of May.
It is unfortunate that the Government of Assam has not yet been able to fully prepare itself to mitigate the sufferings of the people during floods and on most occasions, the concerned departments of the Government start the preparations to deal with the natural calamity only during the monsoon season. Last year, the State faced one of the worst ever floods, which affected all but one district of the State, but till now, most of the flood prone districts are not well equipped to deal with such a situation.

The much-hyped North East Industrial and Investment Promotion Policy (NEIIPP)-2007, which promised to ease the burden off the shoulders of the entrepreneurs by hiking the central capital investment subsidy from 15 per cent to 30 per cent, and that too without any limit, has instead left them in the lurch. As even after more than a year has passed since the NEIIPP-2007 was announced, the State Government has failed to formulate the operational guidelines for it.
To boost growth and development of indigenous technology and their absorption by the industrial sector, the State Government has come forward to set up a Biotech Park in the capital city, which would be the first such endeavour in the North East. Though officially the onset of monsoon in the country is yet to be declared, the northern limit of monsoon has touched the extreme south/ southeast part of Bangladesh close to Mizoram. The normal date of onset of monsoon over Kerala Coast is June 1, while over the city of Guwahati, the onset normally takes place on June 5. By June 6, NE region is generally covered by monsoon. However, variation of seven days in this respect is quite possible, said H Pathak, Director of the Regional Meteorology Centre (RMC) here.
Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi has called upon the Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh and Petroleum Minister Murali Deora to formulate a special compensation package for the Numaligarh Refinery Limited (NRL) to enable the refinery to tide over the crisis faced by it. In a letter to the Prime Minister, the Chief Minister also called for restoring 100 percent excise duty relief to the Refinery, which was reduced to 50 per cent in 2002.
