Enhancing ecology

PROMOTING the cause of sustainable development and spreading environmental awareness in the Asian and Pacific regions, formed the main agenda of the three-day United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) workshop held in Madras, India. The workshop, which began on December 12, also discussed the strategy framed by the Regional Office for Asia and Pacific (ROAP) Of the UNEP, titled 'Environmental Communication and Information Strategy for 1995-2000'.

According to Suvit Yodamani, UNEP director and regional representative for Asia and Pacific, the LINEP programme "aims to respond to four principal environmental challenges, namely, sustainable management and use of natural resources, sustainable production and consumption, a better environment for human health and well being, and globalisation trends and the environment."

The strategy envisages a better exchange of eco-information between the industry, NGOs, and women's groups and proposes to support the governments in the region to formulate effective environmental policies.
