Thorny issue
Leaves and thorns, a feature film by K P Sasi, will be premiered on Doordarshan on October 1, 1995. The film highlights the unequal status of women in a society. It takes off from a real life incident in Kerala.
Three Rebellious women were Ostracised by the community and their own families, because they dared to drink toddy (a local beer) in a restaurant. Thoroughly humiliated, they decided to commit suicide. Says Sasi, -Women in the toddy tapping areas do drink, but they cannot drink in: public place." In the film, Sasi does not take drinking as the issue, because he feels the film could be hijacked by moralists seeking to evade the real issue: women's equality.
