Ready for combat
BHARAT Immunologicals and Biologicals Corp Ltd, a company promoted by both the ministry of science and technology and the department of biotechnology, is setting up India's first plant to manufacture the oral polio vaccine.
The Rs 37.70-crore plant, located at Bulandshahar in Uttar Pradesh, will produce 80 million doses of OPV this year using the tissue culture technology. The seed virus for the vaccine has been acquired from the World Health Organisation and the Moscow-based Institute of Poliomyelitis and Viral Encephalitis. The country has an annual requirement of 200 million doses.
According to company chairperson V R Kalyanaraman, the plant will be able to produce between 120 and 150 million doses by next year. That's still short by about 40 per cent.
