Century Pulp and Paper Mill

Century Pulp and Paper Mill Century Pulp and Paper (cpp), located along the New Delhi-Nainital national highway in Nainital district, Uttar Pradesh, is a wood-based paper and pulp mill. It produces rayon grade pulp (rgp), used mostly by the textile industry, and writing and printing paper (wpp). The company got two leaves and was ranked ninth by the GRP. The relatively low ranking seems to have rid the company of its complacency. It acquired the iso 14001 certificate in June 2000. R L Lakhotia, president of cpp, says, "grp is a good idea. It has helped identify problems and find solutions, improving our environmental management.' The company used to procure 83.2 per cent of its raw material from farm forestry and is now working to increase these figures. And as an initiative it has distributed 4.5 million seedlings of eucalyptus and 0.8 million seedlings of bamboo in 1999-2000. The farm forestry initiative had been taken even before grp arrived on the scene but it has gained momentum now.

Most mills do not monitor adsorbable organically bond halogens (aox) in the effluent. cpp has undertaken successful trials with enzyme pre-bleaching and have reduced chlorine consumption by 30 per cent, consequently AOX levels have gone down. The pilot project being a success the company plans to begin the use of this technology for bagasse pulping. Moving away from chlorine as a bleaching agent, hydrogen peroxide has been introduced to bleach RGP. For WPP, chlorine consumption has decreased from 68 kg per metric tonne (kg/mt) in 1998-99 to 60 kg/mt in 1999
