Breaking the rules

Notified in 1991, the coastal regulation zone (crz) has been amended several times. Seven government committees have been set up to review this most contentious piece of regulation, under pressure from various states and agencies. The amendments are as follows:

August 18, 1994: Relaxation of crz area from 500 metres (m) to 50 m along the water bodies subject to tides. Struck down by the Supreme Court

January 31, 1997: Permitted sand mining and groundwater withdrawal in crz of Andaman & Nicobar (A&N)

July 9, 1997: Permitted reclamation within port limits, construction for expansion and modernisation of ports

August 4, 2000: Permitted storage of LNG (liquefied natural gas) in the inter-tidal area and exploration and extraction of oil and gas in crz

April 12, 2001:a Permission granted to d epartment of a tomic e nergy to set up nuclear power projects, pipelines and conveying systems in crz areas

May 21, 2002: Permitted non-polluting industries like infotech and service industries in crz . Allowed urban development housing projects

October 19, 2002: Permitted non-conventional energy facilities, desalination plans, air strips in a&n

May 30, 2003: Permitted embarkation facilities for Lakshwadweep in crz-i

June 24, 2003: Relaxed no-development zone from 200 m to 50 m in A & n and Lakshwadweep to promote tourism
