ORIGIN OF FLOOD
Vanishing forest cover in Nepal may not be a cause of Bangladesh floods. A study conducted by the University of Berne, the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation and the United Nations University suggests that floods in Ganga and Brahamputra rivers have more to do with the weather patterns in Meghalaya, an Indian state near Bangladesh. Thomas Hofer, a physical geographer at the University of Berne, says the average hydrological flow from the Meghalaya hills and the correlation between high rainfall in Cherrapunji and thereafter flood in Bangladesh suggest that Meghalaya has a decisive role in the flooding.
