A Kenyan court has issued an injunction preventing Canada's Tiomin Resources Incorporation from mining titanium in an area located 12 km away from Kenya's Indian Ocean coastline. Andrew Hayanga, the court's judge, said that the injunction would avoid the possibility of environmental degradation.

Tiomin had sought the Kenyan government's permission to start a us $165 million project, which it said would create 200 direct jobs with an estimated spin-off of at least 1,000 more. However, farmers of the area alleged that the project posed serious risks not only to their livelihoods but also to the environment. According to the officials of Tiomin, an environmental study presented to the government proves that the project would not cause any major harm to the environment. The company's lawyer Patrick Ochwa said he would appeal against the ruling.
