DTE impact
Down To Earth (DTE) broke the story on the endosulfan tragedy in February 2001 (see: Down To Earth, Vol 9 No 19, February 28, 2001). In the next few months all prominent publications actively followed up the story, which led to a major public outcry. Finally, buckling under pressure from the civil society, the Kerala government issued an order in August 2001 banning the use of the pesticide. The then Union health minister, C P Thakur, endorsed this directive.
In July 2002, DTE again exposed the pesticide industry's clandestine attempt to get the ban on endosulfan lifted (see: Down To Earth, Vol 11, No 4, July 15, 2002). This alerted the people of Kerala and the state government was forced to effect a partial rollback.
