The United Nations Development Prog-ramme (UNDP) has allocated US $100,000 to Vietnam to support the relief efforts for the typhoon-stricken areas in that country. Typhoon Linda which hit the southern tip of Vietnam has so far claimed 86 lives and has destroyed nearly 6,000 houses and flooded around 450,000 hectares of rice paddy. According to latest figures available figures more than 2,500 people are still missing. According to Thorben Lund, the UNDP deputy resident representative in Vietnam, relief work is in full progress.
At the 23rd Montreal Protocol Executive Committee meeting which concluded on November 14, UNDP received approval for 101 ozone layer protection projects in 19 deve-loping countries in all regions totalling US $29.3 million. Most of the projects will involve technology conversions that will eliminate some 4,015 tonnes of ozone-depleting chemicals in the manufacture of aerosols, foams, refrigerants and solvents. Three projects in Indonesia, Iran and Sri Lanka will strengthen capacities of national ozone units.
