The United Nations Development Programme has planned to provide a grant of US $280,000 for setting up a conservation education centre in Goa. The project will be implemented by the Worldwide Fund for Nature (WWF). In this regard, the government of Goa has already allocated 1,500 square metres of land on the Miramer beach. According to the secretary general of WWF-India, the centre will lay emphasis on the coastal marine ecosystem, including mangroves. The WWF has documented the biodiversity along the coast between Mumbai and Goa. The organisation has already listed the problems to protect these species, according to WWF officials.
The United Nations (UN) drugs summit has adopted a global strategy to eradicate demand and supply of illicit narcotics in the next 10 years. About 185 countries adopted the declaration by consensus at the end of the three-day UN general Assembly special session. The main document of the summit calls for a crackdown on demand and the elimination of illicit crops with provision for alternative development in producer countries. According to Pino Arlacchi, chief of the UN Drug Control Programme, the end of the meeting marks the start of a new chapter in global drug control.
