MORE WATER
The Supreme Court has ordered Haryana and Punjab to supply an additional 125 cusecs of water from the Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) project to Delhi through its canals to ease the water crisis in the capital. Prior to distribution, the water will be treated at the Nangloi plant. Additional solicitor general Kirit Raval told the court that the Delhi government had earlier requested BBMB for 125 cusecs of water for its Nangloi treatment plant but the Haryana government had denied permission to transport water through its canal system. The Supreme Court bench, comprising Justice B N Kirpal and Justice Ruma Pal, also made it clear that the 125 cusecs of water for Delhi will not be out of the shares of Haryana or Rajasthan, which they are entitled to from BBMB. The court further directed the Central Water Commission (CWC) to monitor the flow of additional water to Delhi and regulate it if there was any danger of canal breaching.
