Other fish in the sea
The United Artists Association (UAA) and Greenpeace India undertook an independent study in the Gahirmatha region to understand, examine and document perceptions and thoughts of fisher communities on income generation schemes and livelihood options as well as their perceptions and attitudes relating to the existing fisheries management and marine conservation measures. The recommendations resulting from this study were arrived at through the results of a comprehensive household survey conducted in fifteen sample villages in the Gahirmatha region, and through Focussed Group Discussions (FGDs). The study reveals an overwhelming support from fisher communities in the region to consider livelihood options provided such options reflect the requirements and needs of the community and are economically sustainable.
