That`s electronics for you

Plastic electronics is by now fairly common; polymer-based transis-tors and fabricated polymer light emitting diodes (LEDs). But now researchers in the US and the UK have reported integrating the two to develop an organic transistor. They are using it to drive a polymer-based LED which is built on top of the transistor. H Sirringhaus and his colleagues at the University of Cambridge, UK, have developed an all-polymer integrated device which has a field effect transistor (FET) driving a polymer LED. The advance made possible by new polymers that can carry high currents could revolutionise the display industry. All plastic, foldable, large-area illuminated signs are just one such possibility.
