Cyber Sniffer

The problem with the nose is that in the case of radioactive materials and toxic waste once you're close enough to smell it, you're too close. Tufts University professors John Kauer and David Walt may have solved that dilemma. Their patented artificial nose technology combines fibre optics and a computer trained to interpret odour data. Their sensor, a polymer-fluorescent dye mixture applied to the tips of hair-thin optical fibres, allows for long-distance sniffing.
