Uganda

Uganda's coffee industry is expected to increase its annual output to a record level by the year 2000 . The latest figures show that Uganda's coffee output is estimated at four million bags during 1997-98 as compared to 3.1 million bags during 1994-95. Industry sources say that the output may go up by five million bags in the next three years. Coffee is the main source of foreign exchange earnings for Uganda. Paul Mugamwa of Uganda's Coffee Exporters Association says that farmers are well motivated to boost production because they are getting payments in time and a bigger market share of the export value.

As a part of its liberalisation process, Uganda has taken steps such as ending the government controlled Coffee Marketing Board Ltd's monopoly on buying, processing and marketing of Ugandan coffee. Until 1991, the Coffee Marketing Board had a monopoly on all procurement, processing and international marketing of its products.
