Green houses
The Italian government has decreed that starting July 2007, new and old buildings being put on sale will need energy-saving certificates. The initiative is part of the government's efforts to cut energy consumption and trim CO2 emissions.
As per the decree, new buildings are expected to boost energy savings by 20-35 per cent over three years by improving thermal insulation to retain warmth in winter; the government also suggests installing solar panels to heat water and cut the use of air-conditioners in summer.
The ministry, however, did not give an estimation of the total energy savings from these measures.
