In a nutshell
Brazilian nut trees are the largest and oldest trees in the Amazon. They can live for 550 years, and produce nuts for about 150 years.
They are also the stoutest trees of the Amazon, with girths measuring up to 16.5 metres.
They are remarkably fertile, dropping vast quantities of nuts that are packaged inside hard pods, the size of grapefruit. The pods are produced for three months a year.
