Carbon case
Ten us states, with New York city and Washington dc, recently sued the us Environmental Protection Agency (epa) in a long-running court battle over the agency's new emission standards for power plants.
The states claim epa has refused to regulate carbon dioxide emissions under the Clean Air Act, despite evidence that it contributed to global warming and harmed public health and welfare. They alleged that epa also did not set sufficient standards for the regulation of sulphur dioxide and nitrogen oxides emitted by power plants.
California, Maine, Massachusetts, New Mexico, Rhode Island and Oregon were some of the states that filed the lawsuit in the us Court of Appeals for the district of Columbia Circuit. The same appeals court dismissed a similar suit last year.
