Judgement of the National Green Tribunal regarding pollution caused by the industrial units in Patancheru and Bollaram, Medak District, Telangana, 24/10/2017

Judgement of the National Green Tribunal (Southern Zone, Chennai) in the matter of Kasala Malla Reddy and Others VS State of Andhra Pradesh & Others dated 24/10/2017 regarding pollution caused by the industrial units especially the pharmaceutical industries in Patancheru and Bollaram, Medak District of Telangana.

The Highlights of the Judgement are the following: 

1. NGT directs the State Government to constitute an Expert Committee to make a thorough study in all the villages forming part of Manjira River basin in and around Nakkavagu and other water bodies and also Musi River Basin to investigate the health hazards of the people living in the area due to the industrial pollution and also whether the activities of the pharmaceutical industries have led to Antimicrobial Resistance to drugs.

2. The Court further directs the Government of Telangana to establish a Government Super Speciality Hospital with adequate medical facilities to treat all sorts of occupational diseases for which the industrial establishments situated in the industrial hub shall contibute 75% of the total cost and the remaining amount to be contributed by the State Government.

3. The Court refuses the appeal for the clsoure of the existing industrial units in Patancheru and Bollaram but the existing units shall have their primary effluent treatment system inside the unit, whether they are members of CETP or not and the same has to be scrupulously enforced by the Regulatory Authority.
