Order of the National Green Tribunal regarding encroachment and pollution of Damodar River, Bokaro, Jharkhand, 17/09/2019

Order of the National Green Tribunl in the matter of Residents of Pichhari Panchayat, District Bokaro Vs State of Jharkhand dated 17/09/2019 encroachment and pollution of Damodar River by Management of Central Coalfields Limited (CCL) at District Bokaro, Jharkhand. It was also alleged that illegal mining was taking place and several trees have been cut which has resulted in diversion of the river.

Report submitted by the District Magistrate, Bokaro and the Jharkhand State PCB stated that encroachment of river bed was found and that the mines and overburden dump wa situated near to the CCL pump house, which was by the side of river at Pichri. The report also stated that a show cause notice has been issued proposing cancellation of consent to operate and recovery of environmental compensation. The Tribunal directs the State PCB to furnish a further action report within a month.
