Status report by Punjab on the steps taken to bridge the gap in solid and liquid waste generation and treatment, 17/11/2023

Second progress/status report (May-September 2023) in compliance of National Green Tribunal order dated September 22, 2022.

In compliance with the NGT order, the state of Punjab constituted a committee under the Chairmanship of Administrative Secretary, Department of Local Government vide office order, November 11, 2022 for regular review of the progress for bridging the gap in solid and liquid waste generation and treatment.

Door to door waste collection and transportation in segregated manner has achieved 99 per cent compliance, segregation of waste at source at 87 per cent, processing of solid waste at 79 per cent. Around 25.48 lakh MT of legacy waste has been remediated and there is a balance of 36.85 lakh MT. Legacy waste remediation has been completed in 79 urban local bodies and remediation is under progress in the remaining 69 ULBs. In addition to processing of composting of wet waste, 17 CNG/bio-methanation plants for processing of wet waste have been planned to be set up.

The ULBs are tying up with plastic waste processors for disposal of plastic waste, particularly multi layered plastics (MLPs). 77 numbers of ULBs tied up with waste processors and 335 tons of waste have been channelized for processing to waste processors. Construction and demolition waste management plants have been set up and are functional at Amritsar and Jalandhar and under construction at Ludhiana.
