american Electric Power ( aep ) Company officials said it could cost over us $2 billion for the company to install pollution controls systems.

The Environmental Protection Agency ( epa ) had asked aep to do so in response to a lawsuit filed against six utility companies. The generating capacity of aep 's six power plants named in the lawsuit is about 8.8 million kilowatts. It will cost us $300 per kilowatt to upgrade the plants according to epa guidelines, aep officials told reporters. Therefore, the total cost could be about us $2.64 billion. aep plans to challenge the verdict.

The epa lawsuit accused aep , along with the five other companies, of modifying more than two dozen power plants without installing the state-of-the-art equipment required by law to control smog, acid rain and soot. There are three plants of the company in Ohio, one each in Indiana and New Haven, and two in West Virginia.
