Prez hands over IIT-K's Jugnu to ISRO

KANPUR: It was a proud moment for the students and teachers of the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur (IIT-K) when Jugnu — India’s first-ever nano satellite developed by them — was formally handed over to the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) by President Pratibha Patil. The occasion was the premier institute’s golden jubilee celebration on Saturday.

Three polluting saree units get closure notice

LUCKNOW: Three units engaged in dyeing and printing of the famous Banarasi saree in Varanasi came under the hammer of UP Pollution Control Board (UPPCB) on Tuesday evening. The board served a closure notice to the units for discharging untreated effluent in the sewer which ultimately drained into the Ganga.

Need for separate campaign to check encephalitis

There are separate national programmes to eliminate malaria and filaria. This despite the fact that both the diseases are caused by the same vector and can be easily covered under the national vector borne diseases control programme. Litterbugs be ready to pay fine

LUCKNOW: Throwing garbage in public places may land you in trouble, if the department of urban development has its way. The department is mulling the proposal to put in place a provision in the Uttar Pradesh Municipal Act, 1959, whereby littering in public places would be deemed to be a penal offence inviting fine.

This wetland has birds flocking to it again

LUCKNOW: The once ailing Nawabganj Bird Sanctuary has seen a turnaround for sure. Thanks to the abundant water at the place, birds are still flocking to the wetland. While the flocks were retreating by February last year, this time they show no signs of it.

No polio case reported in UP

LUCKNOW: The bivalent polio drop seems to be working. Not a single case of polio has been reported from Uttar Pradesh till now. However, more than 700 suspected cases (those suffering from acute flaccid paralysis) have been reported from across the state. But detailed examination of their stool samples revealed that none were suffering from the polio.

Changes in coverage area of metro rail project likely

LUCKNOW: There are broad hints of a change in original draft to set up a metro rail in the state capital. LDA sources said that the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) reviewing the status of the project has indicated an increase in the coverage area.
