They want to adopt the model to save jaguars A team of wildlife experts from Argentina is visiting the Bandipur and Nagarahole tiger reserves to study the conservation methods adopted. The teams will take back lessons from the tiger reserves so that Argentina’s own endangered species, the Jaguar, is reintroduced and protected in that country. Ignacio Simenez, Sofia Heinonen and Valeria Francisco of The Conservation Land Trust (CLT), who are visiting the world’s largest tiger density areas, plan to reintroduce the Jaguar in Argentina’s first naturally protected area, Poa de Corrientes (in the north of the country).
The CBI, which is investigating a case against former chief minister B S Yeddyurappa and his family members, is said to have procured transcripts of debates on illegal mining in the Legislative Council during July 2010. According to sources, the investigative agency wanted the transcripts of the replies made by Yeddyurappa on the steps taken by his government to curb illegal mining. The move, it is learnt, is part of the investigative agency’s efforts to check the veracity of the statements made by Yeddyurappa before it, earlier this month.
The Electronics Division of Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd has commissioned the 5-MW eco-friendly grid connected solar power plant at Shivanasamudram near Mandya in Karnataka. This is the largest solar PV power plant executed by BHEL for Karnataka Power Corporation Ltd (KPCL), the company said in a release here today. BHEL will also operate and maintain the solar power plant for three years, it said.
The Supreme Court’s directive banning all tourism activities in core areas of all tiger reserves in the country had an immediate effect in Bandipur and Nagarahole national parks. By early Wednesday morning, many tourists -- confused, angry and disappointed-- left the place. After the State forest department had on Tuesday decided to stop all tourism activities. For the first time in 40 years, the busy Bandipur tiger reserve as well as Antharasanthe guest house at Nagarhole came to a virtual standstill, following the State forest department deciding on Tuesday to conform with the apex court directive.
In a major victory for citizens, the Division Bench of Chief Justice Vikramajit Sen and Justice Aravind Kumar on Wednesday stayed further progress on the Sirsi Circle-Agara signal free corridor until a committee formed under the Additional Chief Secretary, along with the citizens, agreed upon the alignment of the corridor. Disposing the matter, the Division Bench set a precedence by directing civic agencies like the BBMP and the BDA to involve the citizens who are likely to be affected by the ‘development’ projects.
A smoker spends nearly Rs 384.10 a month on cigarettes on an average (a beedi smoker shells out Rs 126.5), according to the figures furnished by Global Adult Tobacco Survey of Karnataka for the year 2009-10. The survey was officially released by Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar on Tuesday. It reveals that 28.3 per cent of adults — 39.8 per cent males and 16.3 per cent females — in the State use tobacco in some form.
The long-delayed Satellite Town Ring Road (STRR) project to connect Bangalore’s satellite towns - Ramanagar, Dobbespet, Devanahalli, Hoskote, Attibele and Magadi will be implemented by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and the State Public Works Department (PWD). While NHAI will develop the stretch between Dobbespet and Hoskote via Devanahalli, the PWD will construct the stretch between Attibele and Magadi Road under the Karnataka State Highway Improvement Project-II (KSHIP-II), PWD Minister C M Udasi told the Legislative Council on Tuesday, replying to a question by R V Venkatesh.
